The little boy had been bringing the same sandwich to school for three days. The same sandwich. He’d take one bite, wrap it up, and the next day, take a second bite. He didn’t want to feel left out at lunch time.
This young person is one of over a thousand children in the Halton District School Board whom Halton Learning Foundation supports every year – and we’ve been doing it for over 15 years. Whether it’s food, clean clothing, hygiene supplies, a coat, eyeglasses, school supplies, $10 for a field trip or buying proper boots for a work term, HLF always says “yes” when asked by a school principal for help.
One of the most important things in life are relationships; they are the lifeblood that keeps you strong in good times and not so good times. The relationship that Halton Learning Foundation has developed with Global Philanthropic has been simply tremendous and is helping transform how we support students in financial need. I heard Guy Mallabone speak at the 2015 AFP Congress and his discussion on major gifts has shifted our Foundation’s perspective on helping further our mission, focusing less on special events and more on creating a relationship with individual donors. His perspective on the case for support (must be compelling, urgent and passionate) has guided the development of our own case and is helping to bring people closer to HLF, which has resulted in some wonderful new relationships. Coupled with the enormous amount of support that our Lead Consultant provided, our Foundation is making the changes needed to attract new gifts and continue to help those kids who just want to enjoy school and learn – not worrying about how they can afford the basics.
